Measuring Your Windows For Shutters in Atlanta

October 04, 2017

Indoor shutters in Atlanta are typically priced by the square foot, so to get an approximate measurement for a price quote, just measure your window length and width, to the closest eighth of an inch.

For Atlanta residents who are DIYers, Sunburst Shutters Atlanta will show you the easiest way to measure your windows for plantation shutters.

How to Measure Rectangular and Square Windows for Shutters

Regular rectangular windows look like the easiest type of window to measure – and that’s because they are, compared to other uniquely shaped windows. But there’s still an entire process to follow to find your measurements. Here’s the plan.

The Tools That You Need:

  • Tape measure

  • Paper and pen

To start, measure the width (the horizontal distance). Get a measurement across in three different places: in the middle, near the top, and close to the bottom of the window. Mark down each one, rounding to the closest eighth of an inch. Then, do the same for the length (vertical) – measure three times, one in the center, and one near the left and right edges of your window like seen below.

We recommend taking three measurements in each direction because no window is a perfect rectangle. And because you might need a specific mount for your window, you may either need to record the shortest measurement (for an inside mount), or the absolute largest measurement (for an outside mount). Getting measurements in three spots ensures that your bases are covered.

Measuring Non-rectangular Windows for Shutters

Windows that aren’t rectangular are the windows that can present a challenge to measure. Just as there’s no perfect square window, there’s no perfect octagon, circle, or arched window – which means that even if you get perfect measurements, you could still have issues. For the best results, get measurements taken by a professional (which our team is happy to provide for free). Otherwise, here’s how to measure the most common specialty windows for shutters.

How to Measure Arched and Semicircle Windows for Shutters

Measure the width on the window’s flat side. Only measuring around the window opening, mark down to the nearest eighth of an inch the width of the arch. To find the height, look for the window’s midpoint by dividing the width measurement in half, then measure to the top of the window from the point you found. Again, write it down to the closest eighth of an inch.

Measuring Elongated Arch Windows for Shutters

Elongated arch windows are kind of a combination of a rectangular window and a circular window, with a flat, wide bottom and straight “legs,” but with rounded corners at the top and a higher arch. So imagine it like that: a rectangle and an arch put together. Get the width measurement just like you would any other arched window, then take a measurement of the length of the legs (the straight vertical parts before the window curves). Next, measure the window’s max length from the middle of the width, minus the leg height. Like always, write down every measurement to the nearest eighth of an inch.

Measuring Octagon and Circular Windows

Octagonal and circular windows are some of the most difficult to measure accurately, since there are a ton of tiny features that can alter the dimensions of the shutters your window may need. You might want to leave these types of windows to a professional.
