Picking Window Treatments in Atlanta for a Contemporary Room

May 02, 2016

When you’re decorating a room in contemporary style, you need your window treatments to be that same style as well. We talked to Room Resolutions’ principal designer, Jane Cunningham, to better understand how customers should choose the right window treatments for contemporary rooms in Atlanta.

Contemporary décor includes a range of styles influenced by the later portion of the 20th century. It’s built on softer, cleaner lines. In Jane’s experience, everyone has a slightly different definition of contemporary. The majority of the time, homeowners want to open the room up. She’s heard people say things like, “I don’t need an ottoman by every chair.” Or “I don’t have to have 15 items on the counter of my house.”

Contemporary homes “give you the freedom to move.” You can bring the outdoors in - even if you live in a small condo - by opening up your view of the sun, the rain, and the outdoors in Atlanta.

The first step is to unclutter your windows. If you think about your grandparents’ windows, they probably had many layers. There were shades on top of draperies, shutters, valances, and sheers. It’s often claustrophobic. Get rid of the layers. By picking window treatments that have clean lines, you can get the contemporary look you desire.

Your Contemporary Window Treatment Options In Atlanta:

Shutters For Contemporary Homes

White plantation shutters in a contemporary room

Plantation shutters work great with contemporary rooms in Atlanta. They have wide 4.5” louvers which reflect a contemporary style. And when you combine these wide louvers with a rear mount tilt rod, your windows have clean lines across them from the shutters.

Shutters give you control over light. The panels can be swung open to the side so that you’ll see through your entire window. And you can choose to install divided shutters. These shutters have the light coming in through the top.

It’s easy to clean them, which is something to consider if the windows are usually dusty. Contemporary décor looks best when all the items are clean and polished.

Cunningham recommends Polywood shutters to clients who want window treatments for contemporary rooms. They’re her preferred shutter because their colors stay true and they don’t warp over the years.

A trend that Cunningham has noticed is that reclaimed wood shutters are showing up more in contemporary rooms. They give a bit of nostalgia. They highlight the restorative use of hardware. They complement hardwood flooring to pull in the entire room. With reclaimed wood shutters, you can take something from the past, revisit and reuse it. The idea of using reclaimed wood as shutters is the epitome of the contemporary style.

Modern Barn Doors

Barn doors are a full scale masterpiece on the wall. Choose as funky of a color as you want. You can go with the restorative look. Or you can design it to look like a traditional barn door. And you can give it a contemporary feel similar to the hotel you just went to.

Modern barn doors act as room separators in spaces that traditionally don’t have full doors. For example, when you want to close off your kitchen but not all the time.

Barn doors as window coverings are perfect for large windows with adequate wall space. Shaker doors display an openness that is reminiscent of a more contemporary style. The hardware you decide on makes a large difference. Choose stainless steel to get that contemporary look you want. Or choose a bold color of paint. For example, if the entire room is differing shades of white, a bold red barn door would pop on the wall and enhances the space.

“Barn doors add a conversation piece. The next gathering you have, I guarantee someone is going to have a comment. That’s because people aren’t expecting a barn door on a window.” - Jane Cunningham

Cunningham has learned from experience that our homes are part of who we areand also an experience we’re sharing with our guests. And a barn door is going to be part of that experience. Your guests will definitely be talking about them.

Roller Shades

Roller shades are the perfect option for contemporary rooms with large scale windows and doors that fold into themselves. They’re discretely tucked away and help you bring in the outside view.

If you need to sleep in total darkness so you can get a restful night’s sleep, roller shades can be ordered with room darkening options. If you want to block out noise, combine them with draperies which you can hide from sight by tying on the sides of the windows.

Window Film

Most contemporary rooms that are in the Atlanta area contain large windows that can be 25-30 feet tall. And when they face towards the west, the sun wear down the items inside.

Jane recommends window film to her clients with homes that have large windows. It provides you with a wide view of your outside surroundings, which is perfect for a contemporary room.

The film also blocks the sun’s UV rays, which helps your carpeting and furniture maintain their color longer. Window film also contributes to the energy efficiency of your home.
